How this is worked out

  • Your answers become the inputs of Charter's income tax engine, which runs in your browser. The same engine and the same rates data feed the app's computation sheet. No model is used anywhere.
  • Income is added by head: salary less the standard deduction, house property after the 30 percent allowance and the interest, business profit, capital gains and other sources. Under the old regime the deductions are capped by their rows in the rates data and taken off.
  • Tax at slab rates is worked out slab by slab, and the working table shows each slab's income and tax. Long-term gains are taxed apart at the rate you enter.
  • The rebate for residents, the surcharge by band and the 4 percent cess follow. Where marginal relief applies it is shown as its own line, so you can see what the relief saved.
  • Individuals and HUFs also get a second run under the other regime. Rate rows not yet confirmed against the Finance Act 2026 are counted and flagged beside the answer.

Questions CAs ask

Which year and law does this cover?
Tax year 2026-27, the first year of the Income-tax Act 2025. Section numbers are shown the way the 2025 Act numbers them, with the 1961 section a CA knows alongside: the default regime is section 202 (115BAC), the rebate is section 156 (87A), and the 22 percent and 15 percent company options are sections 200 and 201 (115BAA and 115BAB).
Are the rates confirmed?
Not yet, and the page says so under every answer. The 2025 Act is new, so the slabs, surcharge, rebate, cess and deduction limits here come from secondary sources, and a CA has not yet confirmed them against the Finance Act 2026. The count of rate rows behind your figure that still need confirming is shown with the result. Check them before you rely on a number.
Is anything I enter sent or saved?
No. The tax is worked out in your browser by rules, not by a model. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged, and closing the tab clears it.
How does the regime comparison work?
For an individual or HUF, the same figures are worked out a second time under the other regime, and the page shows what the tax would be there. Under the default regime the deductions are not allowed and the standard deduction is the default regime's; under the old regime your deductions and the old slabs apply. It compares the tax only, and a CA should look at the whole picture before advising.
How are capital gains taxed here?
A short-term gain is added to income and taxed at the slab rates. A long-term gain is taxed apart from the slabs at the rate you enter, because the rates data does not yet carry the special rates. Work the rate out first, and remember that exemption limits and the set-off against the basic exemption are not modelled.
What is left out?
Set-off of brought-forward losses, TDS and advance tax credits, interest and late fees, presumptive schemes, and the donation categories and their 10 percent limit. Employer NPS and professional tax are not asked for. The app's computation sheet is where those belong, and this page is a quick estimate.
What does marginal relief mean on the result?
Two reliefs stop a small rise in income from costing more than the rise itself. Just above the rebate limit, the tax is cut back to the income above that limit. Just above a surcharge threshold, tax plus surcharge is cut back to the tax at the threshold plus the income above it. Each shows as its own line when it applies.
