How to import bank statement in Tally from Excel?

Tally does not have one generic "import bank statement from Excel" button — every bank formats its Excel/CSV download differently, and Tally's Bank Reconciliation import only accepts a file laid out the way Tally expects. In practice CAs either use Tally's own Bank Reconciliation import (Gateway of Tally > Banking > Bank Reconciliation, against the bank ledger) when the statement is close enough to that layout, or reshape the file — by hand or with a conversion utility — before importing it, then review the vouchers it creates.

Why there's no single "import from Excel" button

Every bank exports its statement Excel in its own column order, date format and header wording, and Tally's importer expects one specific layout. Using Tally's own Bank Reconciliation import

This is the built-in route, and the one to try first if your statement is already a clean Excel/CSV export from your bank's net-banking portal.

Open the company in Tally and go to Gateway of Tally > Banking > Bank Reconciliation, then select the bank ledger.
Choose B: Import.
Select the statement file. Tally shows a success message with the number of transactions imported, then the Bank Reconciliation screen with the imported entries.
Do not edit or re-save the downloaded statement before importing it — an altered file is a common cause of Tally rejecting it as "Not a valid format" (see the linked guide on that error).

If your bank's export doesn't match

When the statement's layout doesn't match what Tally's importer expects — extra columns, a different date format, header rows in the wrong place — reshape it to a single clean sheet before trying again: one header row, transaction rows only, dates in DD/MM/YYYY, and no currency symbols in the amount columns. CAs on CAclubindia commonly use a conversion utility for this step rather than reformatting by hand every month.

You can, one entry at a time via a payment/receipt voucher, but that's manual entry, not an import — it doesn't go through Tally's Bank Reconciliation import screen and doesn't scale past a handful of transactions.

Does the same import work for a PDF statement, not just Excel?
